There are a few people in the world who create a legacy of giving back. Their lives shape the people around them and make their world a better place. Mr. Outlaw was one of these people.
Born and raised in North Carolina, Mr. Outlaw excelled in his blacksmithing courses and relocated to Onancock after completing his training. His customers were watermen, farmers, neighbors, and friends who came to love him and appreciate his work. His skill was broad, ranging from creating precision pieces for machines to fixing trucks and farming implements. His repairs to children’s bicycles surely brought many a smile to their young faces!
He was an active part of his community, even outside of being the local blacksmith. He was a clerk for Bethel AME Church for 46 years and also their Sunday School Superintendent for 58 years. Additionally, he was a founding member of the Eastern Shore Building & Loan Association.
His blacksmith shop still stands in Onancock today. The museum is open limited hours, but you can book a private tour as well! Contact them at outlawblacksmithshop.org.
The museum features Mr. Outlaw’s tools and equipment, as well as a beautiful green space behind the building that is perfect for walking. This area is currently being made into a memorial garden and you can donate to it and an engraved paver will be placed in the walkway through the garden. Learn more about how to donate here.
Even though Mr. Outlaw passed away in 1994 at the age of 95, his legacy of love and care for his community lives on.
The museum is spearheaded and curated by Gerald Boyd, who is also an active member of the community and who is working to build up the people around him.
