Explore our Seaside Barrier Islands

About

One of the world’s longest remaining stretch of wild barrier islands, Virginia’s Barrier Islands hug the Eastern Shore’s Atlantic coastline and provide protection for the peninsula. They are mystical in their isolation and fascinating in their individual histories. Once home to thriving communities, the artifacts of villages, coast guard stations, and exclusive hunting lodges are still visible today. Private and public conservation entities own most of the islands with the goal of preserving important wildlife habitats. Please adhere to the important restrictions when you visit so we can take care of these pristine islands.
Vast expanses of salt marsh, shallow coastal bays and miles of pristine barrier islands characterize this unique region. This part of Virginia’s coast is widely known for its ecological and economic importance, prominence as a living laboratory for cutting edge coastal research, rich cultural history and nature-based recreational opportunities. Use the Explore our Seaside website for in depth information on which islands are open for visiting and how to visit responsibly.
