Winter brings Virginia's Eastern Shore clear, crisp mornings that make sunrises feel surreal. On the seaside of the peninsula, the horizon is wide open, the marsh glows gold, and the water reflects every color in the sky. If you’re an early riser (or willing to be!) these three spots are worth the early wakeup.
@ Wise Point Boat Ramp
This is one of the most cinematic places on the Shore to watch the day begin. Launch a kayak or pull up to the boat ramp and settle in as the sky shifts from deep blue to soft pink and gold. About 30 minutes before sunrise, “blue hour” casts a calm, glassy glow over the marsh and open water.
As the light builds, you’ll see commercial watermen and recreational boaters heading out toward the Barrier Islands. Pelicans, herons, and egrets move through the marsh as the sun rises over the grasses
(Kayak launch is free; boat ramp requires a small fee.)
The new fishing pier at the Oyster Boat Ramp gives you front-row seats to sunrise on the seaside. You don’t need a boat, just walk out over the water and watch the light stretch across the marsh and channels.
Early mornings here are full of motion: working boats heading out, birds lifting off the grass, and reflections rippling across the creek. It’s one of the easiest places to catch a big-sky Eastern Shore sunrise without having to launch anything, especially if you're staying in Cape Charles.
Wachapreague is the kind of town that feels like it was built for mornings like this. From the docks or along the channel, you can watch the sunrise spread across the water as the small fishing village wakes up and people meander out to walk their dogs and get a coffee.
Fishing boats and charter captains ease out toward the Atlantic, shorebirds work the marsh edges, and the light wraps the waterfront in warm color. It’s a peaceful snapshot of daily life on the seaside of the Shore.
For a sunrise with waves, sky, and wildlife all in one place, head to the Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge. Watch the sun rise over the Atlantic or over Chincoteague Bay as the beach and marsh slowly come alive.
Afterward, take your time on the trails and roads through the refuge. Early mornings are prime time for spotting ponies, birds, turtles, and all kinds of wildlife.
Whether you’re here for a quiet winter weekend or building a longer stay, these sunrises will get you connected with the Eastern Shore’s natural rhythm.
If you're looking for a reason to get up earlier in the new year… this is it!
