Eastern Shore Heritage Trails

Area: Shore-wide

About

The Eastern Shore Heritage Trails bring together the stories, places, and paths that shaped this region. The trails include museum sites, historic landmarks, walking routes, biking paths, and scenic drives. The goal of the Heritage Trails is to help people get out on the Shore and understand what made it the place it is today.

Each part of the logo ties back to what you'll find along the trails:
Oar
— a reminder of the Shore's long history on the water, from Indigenous paddlers and colonial canoes to today's kayakers.
Lighthouse
— a guide for travelers. You'll see the legacy of Assateague, Smith Island, and Cape Charles as you explore.
Path
— the roads, footpaths, and waterways that connect our towns and natural areas. The biker hints at the future Rail Trail and how it will link the Shore in new ways.
Corn
— a nod to the region's early agriculture and the foodways that still define local life.
Great Blue Heron
— a familiar sight in the marsh. It captures the quiet, wild side of the Shore.

The trails are built for wandering. You can follow a theme, visit a cluster of sites, or make a day of exploring one town at a time. However you do it, the goal is the same: learn the story of the Shore while you move through it.
