1. Visit Cape Charles Beach
Cape Charles Beach, located along Mason Avenue is public and free to visit. The Chesapeake Bay waters are clean and calm here, and the water is very shallow, making it the perfect place for little ones to splash without going too deep or getting knocked over by waves.
2. Take a walk at Cape Charles Natural Area Preserve
The Cape Charles Natural Area Preserve is a 50-acre maritime dune forest less than a 5 minute drive from town. The 1/2 mile long wooden boardwalk is shaded and stroller accessible. Enjoy a short nature walk through the towering pine trees or look for turtles and frogs in the freshwater pond. There is ample free public parking and the preserve is open from sunrise to sunset.
3. Go to the Cape Charles Memorial Library
The Cape Charles Memorial Library hosts many educational and fun programs, all of which are free and open to the public. Regularly hosted are events such as storytimes, magic shows, arts and crafts, family bingo, make your own ice cream, and more. They also have dedicated educational computers and a section just for kids. 4. Play at Cape Charles Central Park
Kids can run in the grassy open area, play on the playground, or splash at the fountain located in Cape Charles Central Park.
5. Shop at Chessie's Toys and Games
Swing by Chessie’s toy store at 215 Mason Avenue in Cape Charles to find all kinds of fun, games, and local souvenirs, including Needoh and many other kinds of squishies!
6. Go to Cape Charles Brewing Company
Wait, what?! Yes, you read that right! The Cape Charles Brewing Company on the road into town is the perfect place for parents and kids alike. Sit in the outdoor patio, listen to the live music, and savor the local flavors while watching your kids play at the play area with a sandbox, large connect 4, yard chess set, and other games. Plus, they have a kids menu!
7. Devour an ice cream cone
With three separate ice cream parlors, Cape Charles is the perfect place to enjoy a cool afternoon snack. Visit Cowlicks Creamery, Brown Dog Ice Cream, or Chase's Soft Serve to find your favorite flavor.
8. Read at Peach Street Books
Inside this charming building is a bookstore containing thousands of new and gently used books, including a kids section. They also serve coffee and pastries.
9. Play a round at Cape Charles Mini Golf
Have fun at this 18-hole ADA accessible mini-golf course, complete with two water features! Kids under 5 play free! Everyone else $13. They also have a small snack bar and occasionally live music.
10. Make a splash at the Northampton County YMCA
Purchase a vacation pass and splash away at the YMCA. Vacation passes can be purchased for an individual or family and a family week pass is only $75. Play at the outdoor pool and splash pad, or participate in the family programs. Usually scheduled for weekend evenings, programs include pool games, arts and crafts, family fitness, games, movie nights, parents’ night out, and more. 11. Explore the Barrier Islands Center
The Barrier Islands Center is located in Machipongo, a short drive north from Cape Charles. Come and learn what the Eastern Shore is all about at the Barrier Islands Center, a museum celebrating the history, beauty, and culture of the Shore and the people who inhabit it. It is a family friendly place where children are encouraged to visit and explore the Lego tables, “fossil pit”, lawn croquet, and other kids’ activities located on the top floor.
