3 Top Sunrise Spots on Virginia’s Eastern Shore

January 12, 2023

During the winter time, the sunrises are unreal on Virginia's Eastern Shore. Start your trip off right and catch a sunrise at one of these locations on the seaside of our peninsula!

1.) Eastern Shore of Virginia National Wildlife Refuge

Grab your kayak or your boat and head out onto the water from the Eastern Shore of Virginia National Wildlife Refuge's Wise Point boat ramp. The kayak launch is free but the boat ramp requires a small fee.

Don't forget about "blue hour" about 30 minutes before sunrise! It is magical on the water and over the marsh.

Watch boats leave out of the boat ramp in the early morning light. From commercial fishermen to visitors going out for a trip to the Barrier Islands, there are a great variety of boats to watch as you wander the waterways. CNWR Sunrise over the water 3

2.) Town of Wachapreague

Nestled on the seaside of Virginia's Eastern Shore, the quiet town of Wachapreague is a perfect place to enjoy a peaceful sunrise.

Watch the town wake up with the sun and you can catch sights of shorebirds and waterfowl along the marsh.

In the early morning, commercial fishermen and charters head out of this channel as they make their way towards the Barrier Islands and the Atlantic Ocean.

3.) Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge

There are few things more peaceful than watching the waves roll in as the sun rises.

When you've watched the sunrise, enjoy wandering the trails and find wildlife like ponies, birds, and turtles as you explore!

Even from the other side of the Island, you can enjoy the early morning light over the Chincoteague Bay.
